Preparing your Commercial Roof for the Winter Months

When it comes to roofing, it’s very important that you stay on top of your roof’s condition and don’t ignore problems that will end up getting worse. Now that the cold winter months are almost here, you need to be thinking about preparing your commercial roof for the winter. Weather reports are all indicating that this year’s winter is going to be worse than last year’s. The first thing you need to do is an overall inspection. While an inspection is very important, so is your overall safety. With that said, it’s a great idea to leave the inspection to the experts. Here at Roberts McNutt, our roofing experts are trained on what to look for in making sure your commercial roof is ready to take on all that Mother Nature has in store for the winter months.

If your roof is full of leaves, twigs, branches or debris we will make sure to clean it thoroughly. The problem with having a dirty, sloppy roof is that any debris can cause mold, fungus and mildew to grow. This can do a good job of wearing down the membrane and causing a water infiltration problem on the inside of your building. Next, our crew will inspect the gutters and downspouts surrounding your building. Any sign of sagging gutters will be addressed because this signifies that they will not be able to support heavy volumes of water, snow and ice. If your gutters aren’t ready for the winter this is an issue you need to fix as soon as possible. You don’t want to delay because if excess water has nowhere to go it will find its way inside your building. This is a big problem that can easily cost your business thousands of dollars.

Next, our crews will make your roofing insulation is dry. Wet insulation can lead to mold and mildew not to mention the reason why your heating bills are through the roof. Literally. Lastly, our team of professionals will inspect your roof edge. This is your first line of defense against inclement weather. We will make sure all fasteners are correct and in great shape. Inspecting your roof edge is important because if it has signs of damage your building is in danger.

Remember the key to a healthy roof is to not delay any repairs. If you want peace of mind this winter, give us a call here at Roberts McNutt. Since 1978, we have been providing you with the very best roofing Solutions in Little Rock, NWA, Jonesboro and surrounding areas. We can provide you with as many references as you would like and show you why our customers wouldn’t trust anyone else with their roof.

The Differences between Solar PV & Solar Thermal

Posted on: September 20th, 2017 by admin No Comments

The Differences between Solar PV & Solar Thermal

The concept of utilizing solar energy is such a smart way to save you money. After all, the sun is free. Whether at home or at work, solar energy is just a smart alternative to relying solely on the greedy energy companies. Here at Roberts McNutt, we are so much more than a company that excels at keeping the water out for good. We carry two different varieties of solar solutions, solar thermal and solar photovoltaics (PV).

Let’s start with solar photovoltaics (PV) Solar PV actually converts solar energy into DC electricity. It is then inverted into AC electricity. The AC (alternating current) is used to operate many things including lights, televisions, heating and air, etc. Using Solar PV is a win-win for business owners and homeowners because it dramatically cuts down your regular utility costs. It’s also a great way to help the environment.

Solar thermal has many benefits as well. Do not believe anyone who says that solar thermal can only be used to heat water and nothing else. This is simply not true. Solar thermal is also a great way to provide heat as well as cooled air. Thermal heating and cooling will dramatically cut your energy consumption during the hot summer months and the cold winter months. Solar thermal is also very convenient because it can actually store solar heat to use at night or on cloudy or rainy days.

No matter which form of solar works best for you, you can see that solar just makes sense. You can save a great deal of money by relying on something that is free from Mother Nature; the sun. There are also many incentives for using solar including utility credits, tax rebates, etc. Roberts-McNutt is proud to be a leader in solar solutions and we’d love the opportunity to show you how you can start saving today!

Definite Signs that Your Commercial Roof Needs Work

Posted on: June 28th, 2017 by admin No Comments

Definite Signs that Your Commercial Roof Needs Work

There are definite signs you need work on your commercial roof. The key is knowing what to look for and not waiting too long! No one wants to have to scramble at the last minute to have their roof fixed when problems occur. After all, you have a business to run and dealing with roofing issues shouldn’t be eating up hours in your day! Indicator number one is all about the moisture. How do you tell if your roof has a moisture problem? If you have visible water stains on your ceilings or you notice that you have an increase of insects or rodents then you most likely have a moisture problem on your roof.

Another pretty obvious sign that you need work on your commercial roof is that you have crazy high energy bills. The bottom line is that your roof may have lost a great deal of its reflectivity which is forcing your thermostat to work extra hard to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. This is an expensive problem that will not get any better unless you invest in your commercial roof.

Another tell-tale sign that you need work done on your commercial roof involves bubbles. To see this sign you need to physically be on top of your roof. If you are not comfortable doing that, call in the pros. In a nut shell, bubbles come from moisture building up under the top layer. The more bubbles, the more work your roof needs. While you or a professional is up on your roof, making sure you have adequate flashing is important. If there are gaps, flashing is missing or dislodged and you need to have work done on your roof as soon as possible.

These are all pretty big signs that you need to have your commercial roof replaced or repaired in a timely manner. Whatever you do, make sure you choose a respected and experienced company for the job. Here at Roberts-McNutt, no other company is more experienced than us. No job is too big, too small, or too complicated. For your convenience, we have set up three convenient locations to serve you including, North Little Rock, Springdale and Jonesboro Arkansas. When it comes to commercial roofing, we do it all including metal roofs, BUR roofing, garden roofs, PVC roofing, etc. Commercial roofing is our specialty and we do it better than anyone else.

Choose Solar for Your Commercial Building

If you dread receiving your monthly electricity bills, it’s time you started thinking differently on how to reduce your bills and save money every month. Solar panels are a great way to lower the monthly electricity bills of your commercial building. That’s right, solar benefits commercial buildings in a very big way! Here at Roberts-McNutt, we have a comprehensive Solar Solutions team that can show you how solar energy can lower your business’ monthly electricity bills. Even better, our solar panels are extremely low maintenance and reliable.

Solar is so simple and operates from sunlight, which is free! Here’s how it works in more depth. When sunlight strikes the panels they convert that into electricity. This electricity can then be used to run your business. All extra electricity that your business produces is never wasted. Instead, it all flows back into the electricity grid and you will love the fact that you will receive a credit from the electricity company! Implementing solar is a win-win situation for your business. You will not only be saving money on your monthly electricity bills, you will also be reducing your dependency on the electricity companies. Here at Roberts-McNutt, our solar panels are unlike any other. They are fully automatic so that once our crews come out and install them you do not have to give them a second thought.

BUR and EPDM – What They Stand For and When Gardens are Roofs

BUR and EPDM – What They Stand For and When Gardens are Roofs

Roofing Repairs

There are a lot of commercial roofing options available, ranging from the single-ply Duro-Last® system to traditional metal roofs. Other options with more obscure names or function include BUR, EPDM, and even Garden, but the interesting question is what they all mean. That’s when things start to get confusing for commercial business owners trying to decide on the right roofing material. At Roberts-McNutt we carry the previously mentioned systems as well as TPO, PVC, and Modified Bitumen. Our job is to help you understand what these different types of roofing can do so you’ll know which one is best for your business. We’re not going to break them all down right here, but we will cover BUR, EPDM, and a little bit of Garden in some quick bullet points.

BUR Roofing System

  • Name: The acronym “BUR” stands for Built Up Roofing, which is a flat roofing system made up of several layers laminated together with bitumen. The material for the layers can be felt, fabric, or mats.
    • Bitumen: A tar like substance used to bind materials together by acting as an adhesive. The word is almost interchangeable with the term “asphalt.”
  • Advantages: BUR roofing is one of the more traditional type of commercial roofing due to the materials used. Commonly surfaced with gravel, they are referred to as “tar and gravel” roofs. The applications can fit nearly any type of roof, but the steeper the slope, the shorter the lifespan due to the longer processing time.

EPDM Roofing System

  • Name: Short for Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer, this roofing is sometimes referred to as the “rubber roofing system” since it is a single-ply rubber roofing membrane.
  • Advantages: This type of roofing is resistant to damage from hail, wind, ultraviolet radiation, heat, and fire. It is also flexible to accommodate various temperatures. EPDM is best used for low-sloping roofs and is one of the most affordable commercial roofing options available.

Garden Roofing

  • Name: Sometimes referred to as “Green Roofs,” a garden roof is designed to improve the overall energy efficiency of a building by helping to reduce the cost of heating and cooling. They are populated by plant life, hence the name, for both aesthetics and energy conservation.
  • Advantages: Conserves energy by providing better protection against a roofs natural absorption of radiant heat. Provides greater curb appeal and fosters a peaceful environment atop the building.

The range of roofing that we offer at Roberts-McNutt each carry their own unique benefits in their design and materials. If you’re still unclear about the characteristics and benefits of BUR, EPDM, or Garden Roofs, don’t hesitate to contact us so we can answer any lingering questions you may have. We can also go into detail about our other roofing systems, such as TPO, if you’re curious about that. Above all, remember Roberts-McNutt has the answer for all of your commercial roofing needs.

Let Solar Energy Boost Your Eco-Ego

Let Solar Energy Boost Your Eco-Ego

There are several ways to boost your home’s energy efficiency, but, by far and away, installing solar panels is the best way to go about it. At Roberts-McNutt, we have solar solutions for residential and commercial properties. We believe that solar power is the best way to power your residence, mostly because it keeps your energy cost down and can actually be fed back into the grid to get you credit from the company that provides your electricity. One of the concerns we hear most about the affordability of solar panels. While there is no easy way to answer that as the pricing has changed (lowered) in recent years and there is no fixed price, there is a federal tax credit of 30% for solar investments, which can curb the cost of getting solar panels for your home or business.

Another thing to think about is what type of solar solutions are available and which is right for you. The primary two solar systems are solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (PV). The latter has the benefits of having a longer lifespan, great efficiency throughout the year, and can provide over half the energy your home needs to function. Conversely, solar thermal benefits from its ability to provide heated water for houses and are relatively maintenance free, plus, they take up less space. There are other factors to take into account, such as storage of power and the differences between direct and indirect solar energy conversion, which may affect your decision.

Regardless of which type of solar solution you choose, Roberts-McNutt is sure to provide you with exactly what you’re looking for. If you have any more questions about solar energy and the benefits it can provide, or how it works, contact us and we’ll be more than happy to help you. The time to switch to solar is now, especially with the prices of other energy sources on the rise. Rather than paying your energy company all of your hard earned money, have them pay you when you put power back into the grid. Let Roberts-McNutt help you boost your eco-ego today by giving you the means to reduce your carbon footprint and take advantage of our greatest renewable source of energy.
